Washington Post Article Shines Favorable Light on Chiropractic
(Source: American Chiropractic Association www.acatoday.com )

Chiropractic recently received national attention thanks to a favorable article in The Washington Post

The feature story, titled “Mainstream Makes Adjustments,” appeared on the front page of the July 17 health section and includes the personal experiences of chiropractic patient and writer, Buzz McClain, who – following three unsuccessful spinal surgeries – was referred by his neurologist to ACA member Dr. Glenn Loebig.

One of the most powerful comments in the story is from Dr. William Lauerman, chief of spine surgery and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital. “I’m an orthopedic spine surgeon, so I treat all sorts of back problems, and I'm a big believer in chiropractic,” he is quoted as saying. “I'm more of a believer for acute problems like short-term back pain, although I know [chiropractic] can be helpful for some cases of more-chronic conditions.”

Several ACA representatives were quoted in the article, including ACA Executive Vice President Kevin Corcoran, Dr. Bill Morgan of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and Dr. Bill Lauretti, an ACA spokesperson and associate professor at New York Chiropractic College. Also included in the story is information about chiropractic education and a sidebar on “what to expect” during your first visit.

New Low-Back Pain Guidelines Should Encourage Patients to Utilize Spinal Manipulation

Newly released practice guidelines published in the Annals of Internal Medicine stress a conservative approach to treating low-back pain and recommend spinal manipulation as one treatment with proven benefits. Inb light of these new guidelines, doctors and patients should strongly consider chiropractic care for the treatment of acute and chronic back pain, says the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).

“As shown in the literature, chiropractic spinal manipulation is a very effective treatment for low-back pain and other musculoskeletal injuries,” says ACA President Glenn Manceaux, DC.  “Furthermore, doctors of chiropractic have broad diagnostic skills and are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, which can help patients prevent future injuries.”

In the guidelines proposed by Chou et. al., researchers recommended that patients whose low-back pain—a pervasive condition affecting millions of Americans each year— does not improve with self-care “should consider the addition of nonpharmacological therapies with proven benefits” — including chiropractic spinal manipulation.

“If your back pain is not resolving quickly, visit your doctor of chiropractic,” Dr. Manceaux recommends.  “Many chiropractic patients with relatively long-lasting or recurring back pain feel improvement shortly after starting chiropractic treatment. The relief and return to function they experience after a month of treatment is often greater than after seeing a family physician.”

Back Pain Facts & Statistics

(Source: American Chiropractic Association www.acatoday.com )

Although chiropractors care for more than just back pain, many patients visit chiropractors looking for relief from this pervasive condition. In fact, 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time.

A few interesting facts about back pain:
1. One-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.
2. Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
3. Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic—meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.
4. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain—and that’s just for the more easily identified costs.
5. Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.

Acupuncture

The Chinese healing art of acupuncture is one that can be dated back at least two thousand years. Some authorities maintain that acupuncture has been practiced in China for as many as four thousand years. One of the most important concepts of Chinese medicine is that of natural balance. From this idea of balance arises the fundamental theory of yin and yang.

The National Institutes of Health's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) says that acupuncture relieves pain and helps minimize nausea after chemotherapy or anesthetic.

It's also useful for treating addiction, headache, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and asthma. Side effects are minimal.

Acupuncture has had huge clinical success with inflammation, tendonitis and back pain at our clinics and is considered safe and effective for pain and nausea.
